  • How often does my cat or dog need a rabies shot?

There are two different schedules for rabies vaccines, one year or three year. Dogs should receive their first shot by 14-16 weeks of age and cats by 12-14 weeks of age. Dogs and cats require an additional booster within the first year. Once the initial vaccinations are done, your pet will follow either the one or three year booster schedule, depending on your vet’s recommendation.

The frequency of booster shots depends on your dog’s age, the vaccine itself, and other risk factors like where you live. Distemper, parvovirus and adenovirus are major risks for dogs and require booster shots every three years. Non-core vaccines, like canine influenza, bordetella, lyme disease and leptospirosis can be administered at your vet’s discretion.
